There's No Monkeying Around Here!

Those Fransiscan Monks really know what they're doing. Of course, the Franziskaner Brewery is no longer run by monks (as far as I know) - but their brewing heritage continues to this day. And when it comes to traditional weissbier, I don't think they can be beaten.

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't often choose a weissbier. I once had a pint of Hoegaarden whilst on a night out with my brother - it was fine, but years went by before I tried anything similar again. However, whilst exploring Sainsbury's growing NAB offering I found this and thought it was worth a try.

Wheat beer smells a bit more like bread than other beers, and this one is no different. But it's not overpowering. The beer pours well, it has a decent head which lasts. As the photo shows, it starts quite big (depending on how well you pour it), but I enjoyed this beer over half an hour, and the head remained throughout, which was nice. Feels like a proper beer.

It's a bit cloudy, which is par for the course with weissbier, but I guess could be a little disconcerting if you're not expecting it. It's a dull mid-straw colour, which mixed with the cloudiness doesn't look too appealing, but don't be put off!

The Franziskaner Weissbier, at less than 0.5% ABV tastes, smells and has the mouth-feel of a proper beer. I'm pretty sure that if someone had passed this to me and not told me it was almost alcohol free I would never have guessed that it was a NAB. To me, it has quite a mild taste, which seems very slightly sweet, definitey not bitter, and the aftertaste is pleasant.

Even if you're not a weissbier fan, I'd really recommend giving this one a try. And if you are a weissbier fan, definitely give this one a go - I'm sure you'll not be disappointed.
