So, the Perlenbacher range at Lidl. Let's be honest, if you're in the market for a half-decent lager, you're probably going to go for a bigger brand. I don't think I've ever sampled the alcoholic Perlenbacher lager (generally opting for one of Lidl's pretty good and nicely packaged alcoholic IPAs). But, when looking for a non-alcoholic beer in Lidl I stumbled across this offering, well, it would have been rude not to.
I wasn't holding out much hope. But actually, this is a pretty good non-alcoholic lager. In fact, if you look at the bottle and squint a bit, you'd probably say it looked a bit like Heineken 0.0, and as far as taste goes it's very similar. Of course, Lidl do a great line in closely copying the market leader across all of their own-brand stuff, and Heineken 0.0 is pretty well regarded if bog-standard lager is your thing. It's no surprise then that Lidl's non-alcoholic beer is very similar, but very much cheaper (which is no bad thing)!
There are the usual malty flavours which mark this out as a NAB from the off, but they're not overpowering and if you've been drinking alcohol free beers for a while you'll be familiar with this slant on the flavour. As with any lager, best served properly cold. I bought this in a 6 pack, and I'll have no trouble finishing it off.
The amount if fizz is just right, the flavour is good. Go on, give it a try, I'm sure you won't find much better for the money.
